College Scholarship Deadlines 2026-2027: Complete Calendar
Every major college scholarship deadline from August 2026 through March 2027, verified by month. The Gates Scholarship opened July 15 and closes September 15.
By Jorbi TeamThe Gates Scholarship portal opened four days ago. As of July 15, 2026, it's live and accepting applications for a full ride that can exceed $50,000 a year. If you're a rising senior reading this in July, you have a head start that most of your classmates don't know they need.
That head start disappears fast. Three of the biggest national scholarships in the country close before October 1, and two of them fall on the exact same day. This calendar maps every major college scholarship deadline from August 2026 through March 2027 so you can plan the scholarship season the way you'd plan anything with this much money at stake: systematically.
One quick note on confidence levels before you dig in: dates marked ✅ are confirmed directly from official scholarship websites. Dates marked 🟡 are cross-referenced by two or more credible sources. Dates marked 🔶 are estimated from historical patterns and should be verified at the official URL before you submit anything.
Why the Scholarship Calendar Starts in Summer, Not Fall
Four flagship scholarships open in August. Most students don't start thinking about scholarships until after Common App season kicks off, and by then the Gates deadline has already passed.
Here's the sequencing problem that trips up even prepared students: the Gates Scholarship (September 15), QuestBridge National College Match (September 30), and Coca-Cola Scholars (September 30) all close before most college Early Decision deadlines even arrive. You cannot defer these to "after Common App." They run on their own track, and that track starts now.
August 2026: Four Major College Scholarships Are Open Right Now
The table below shows what's already accepting applications as you read this.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation recently increased its award to up to $55,000 per year, making it the highest-value private scholarship available to high school seniors in the country. The application opens August 19 and requires three years of family income documentation. Start pulling those tax returns the week it opens. According to a recent guide from AskSia, the median family income of recent Cooke Scholars is around $45,000, and the income cap sits at $95,000 adjusted gross income.
September 2026: The Earliest Major Scholarship Crunch
September is where students get blindsided. Three national deadlines land before the month ends, and two are the same day.

September 30 deserves a separate warning. QuestBridge and Coca-Cola close simultaneously, but they couldn't be more different in complexity. The QuestBridge application, confirmed by the official QuestBridge Zendesk page (updated May 29, 2026), requires teacher recommendations that your senior-year teachers have had about three weeks to write. Coca-Cola Phase I, per the official foundation site, needs no supporting documents: just an eligibility quiz and online form.
Smart sequencing: complete Coca-Cola in August (about 30 minutes), then focus entirely on QuestBridge through September.
One Gates-specific trap worth flagging: the scholarship requires FAFSA to confirm Pell eligibility, but FAFSA doesn't open until October 1, which is two weeks after Gates closes. Complete FAFSA using 2025 tax data as early as possible, and flag this dependency with your school counselor now.
October 2026: PSAT and QuestBridge Rankings
Once September closes out, attention shifts to National Merit and QuestBridge's ranking process.

A note on PSAT and National Merit timing that trips up a lot of seniors: students who took the PSAT in October 2025 (junior year) are the ones who will see National Merit recognition this academic year. The October 2026 PSAT determines National Merit outcomes for the class of 2028. If you're a current senior, your National Merit fate was settled last fall.
QuestBridge deserves its own dedicated track in your planning, not a slot wedged between Common App tasks. Partner schools include Yale, Stanford, Princeton, MIT, and more than 45 others. A match is binding and functionally replaces Early Decision at the school you're matched with. Many first-generation applicants treat QuestBridge as an add-on to their regular college list. That's the wrong frame entirely.
November 2026: Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Closes
One major deadline this month, but it's significant.

The JKCF FAQ page states verbatim: "The 2027 College Scholarship Program application will be open August 19, 2026 – November 11, 2026." That's a firm close. If you open the application in mid-October and scramble for documents in early November, you're going to feel it. Start the income-documentation gathering in August.
December 2026 Through March 2027: The Second Wave
Missing the September wave isn't fatal. A meaningful group of scholarships opens or closes between December and March, including two of the most valuable need-based programs in the country.

The Ron Brown Scholar Program awards $40,000 over four years to African American seniors with a minimum 3.0 GPA, confirmed by Scholaroo. The January 9, 2027 deadline is cross-referenced by two independent sources. Check ronbrown.org directly for the open date, since sources conflict on whether it's August or November.
The Horatio Alger National Scholarship has two separate deadlines depending on your grade. Seniors must submit by February 15; juniors get until March 1 at noon ET. The official Horatio Alger site and multiple school district sources confirm these dates consistently. Some third-party aggregators list an October 25 date, which most likely refers to a state chapter program, not the national award. Stick to the official site.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the first college scholarship deadline I should worry about in fall 2026?
The Gates Scholarship closes September 15, 2026, making it the earliest major national deadline of the cycle. It's already open as of July 15, 2026. If you're Pell-eligible and a student of color with a 3.3+ weighted GPA, this is your first priority right now.
Do QuestBridge and Coca-Cola Scholars really close on the same day?
Yes. Both close September 30, 2026 (QuestBridge at 11:59 p.m. PT, Coca-Cola at 5:00 p.m. ET). Since Coca-Cola Phase I requires no supporting documents, complete it first in August. Then give September entirely to QuestBridge.
Is QuestBridge's deadline September 30 or October 1?
It's September 30 at 11:59 p.m. PT. Northwestern's admissions page shows "October 1," but that reflects the university's own processing window, not the QuestBridge submission deadline. The QuestBridge Zendesk FAQ, updated May 29, 2026, is unambiguous: September 30 is the hard deadline with no extensions.
What if I miss the September scholarship deadlines?
You still have strong options. The Horatio Alger Scholarship opens December 1 (senior deadline February 15), the Ron Brown Scholar Program closes January 9, and Gates Phase II runs through January 15 for semifinalists. A December-through-March scholarship strategy is entirely viable.
Which scholarships on this calendar are need-based vs. merit-based?
Gates, QuestBridge, Jack Kent Cooke, Ron Brown, and Horatio Alger all have financial need components. Coca-Cola Scholars is achievement-based with no income requirement. National Merit is purely merit-based. Dr Pepper, Regeneron, Davidson Fellows, and Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are open regardless of financial need.
What to Do Right Now
- Open the Gates Scholarship portal today. It's been live since July 15 at thegatesscholarship.org. If you're Pell-eligible, review the eligibility requirements this week. As one scholarship guide notes, "Many applicants are caught off guard because this is earlier than the majority of college application deadlines."
- Register with QuestBridge before August. The application opens late summer and the program emails registered students directly. Get to questbridge.org and sign up now. In a May 2026 official briefing, QuestBridge staff were direct: "It is NOT rolling. That is the hard deadline."
- Pull three years of tax returns for Jack Kent Cooke. The application opens August 19 and closes November 11. The income documentation (2023, 2024, and 2025 AGI) is the longest piece to gather, per the AskSia JKCF guide. Don't wait until October to start looking for it.
- Block September 30 on your calendar. Two major deadlines, same day. Complete Coca-Cola Phase I in August so that day belongs entirely to QuestBridge.
- File FAFSA October 1, the moment it opens. Multiple scholarships on this list require financial documentation, and Gates specifically needs Pell confirmation. Filing immediately also starts the clock on any aid verification your school may require.
All dates marked 🔶 in this calendar are estimated from historical patterns. Before submitting any application, verify the current deadline at the official scholarship website. Programs update their timelines without notice, and the official page is always the source of record.
