Scholarship Deadlines Rising Seniors Need in 2026
Gates opened July 15. Coca-Cola opens August 3. Every major scholarship deadline for Class of 2027 seniors, organized by when to start applying now.
By Jorbi TeamThe Gates Scholarship portal opened on July 15, 2026. If you're a high-achieving minority student from a low-income household and you haven't started your profile yet, you're already a week behind on one of the most competitive full-ride awards in the country. And Gates is just one of six major programs currently accepting applications right now, in July, while most rising seniors are still in "I'll deal with this in September" mode.
That's exactly the problem this calendar is designed to fix. Below is every major scholarship deadline Class of 2027 students need to track between now and spring 2027, organized by when to start each application, with final deadlines clearly marked.
The Full 2026-2027 Scholarship Deadline Calendar
Here is the complete picture, from programs open today through those that won't launch until winter. Status indicators: Open = accepting applications now; Opens Soon = portal not yet live; Not Yet Open = plan ahead.

Two programs on this list deserve a correction flag right now. Dell Scholars is not open for the Class of 2027. Multiple aggregator sites (including some major ones) still display the February 15, 2026 deadline without clarifying that cycle has fully closed. The Class of 2027 portal opens December 15, 2026. Similarly, NAACP scholarships won't open until approximately April 2027, based on the confirmed 2026 cycle, which ran April 13 through May 22. If you've seen either of these listed as current opportunities somewhere, that information is stale.
Apply Right Now: July 2026 Deadlines
The most urgent items aren't the flashiest, but they're genuinely worth ten minutes of your time.
Bold.org "Be Bold" and Niche's no-essay scholarships both close July 31. These are random drawings, not merit awards, so set accurate expectations: they're sweepstakes with real winners every month, not a substitute for substantive applications. The time investment is minimal enough that there's no reason to skip them.
Gates is the more important July action item. The portal opened July 15 and closes September 15, which sounds like plenty of runway. Here's the catch: FAFSA documentation is a hard prerequisite, and most competitive applicants spend four to six weeks on their essays alone. A detailed application guide from MastersGrant.com (April 2026) specifically advises submitting at least two weeks before the deadline to avoid document issues. If you're a minority student who is Pell-eligible with a GPA of 3.3 or higher, open your profile at thegatesscholarship.org this weekend.
The Regeneron Science Talent Search 2027 application also opened June 1 and is currently accepting submissions through November 5. The hard deadline is 8pm ET, with no exceptions. If you have original independent STEM research, start now. The application form isn't the time bottleneck. The research paper is.
Per the official STS YouTube application tour from June 2026, students have five months to finalize their work. Students who don't yet have a completed research project cannot realistically start this one in October.
The August Sprint: Coca-Cola, QuestBridge, and Elks
Three programs open within days of each other in early August, and all three require meaningful lead time.
The Coca-Cola Scholars Program officially confirmed its 2027 application opens August 3, 2026. Phase 1 asks for basic demographic information, no essays and no transcript. That low friction is exactly why you should start on August 3, not August 30: getting Phase 1 in early puts you in the pool before Phase 2 (which is more intensive) opens to qualified applicants. The deadline is September 30, awards are $20,000, and 150 students receive them each year.
The Elks Most Valuable Student scholarship opens August 1, but the process works differently from every other program on this list. You apply through a local Elks Lodge, not a national portal. Find your nearest lodge at elks.org. Because local lodges set their own internal deadlines (typically in November, ahead of the national submission), you need to contact your lodge in August to get the real deadline for your area.
This program awards 500 scholarships of $1,000 to $7,500 per year, which means the odds are meaningfully better than most nationally competitive awards. It's chronically underapplied to precisely because students don't know about the local lodge process.
QuestBridge National College Match opens in late August with an October 1 deadline. If your household income is typically under $65,000 and you're in the top 5 to 10 percent of your class, this is one of the highest-value applications you'll file this fall. Full four-year scholarships at partner schools can exceed $200,000 in total value. Note that QuestBridge does not require FAFSA specifically, but does require financial documentation, so gathering income records and tax returns now will save you a scramble in September.
October and November: Peak Competition Season
Here's where deadline stacking becomes a real problem. QuestBridge (October 1), Coca-Cola (September 30), Gates (September 15), BigFuture's Strengthen Your College List task (October 31), Voice of Democracy (October 31), Jackie Robinson Foundation (November 2026), Jack Kent Cooke (approximately November), and Regeneron STS (November 5) all land in a window that also overlaps with Common App early action and early decision deadlines. Treat October as a scholarship sprint and plan your weeks accordingly.
The BigFuture scholarship program runs through this whole fall window. Complete all six planning tasks (Start Your Scholarship List, Start Your Career List, Explore Majors, Strengthen Your College List, and others) to maximize your monthly drawing entries for awards up to $40,000. Each task takes under ten minutes and earns you entries that roll forward. Counselors consistently cite this as the most underused no-essay entry point for seniors.
The Critical FAFSA Connection
FAFSA timing is scholarship timing. This is the planning mistake I see students make year after year.
The Gates Scholarship requires a submitted FAFSA Student Aid Report as a hard prerequisite. Dell Scholars requires Pell Grant eligibility verified by your SAR. The NAACP scholarships require a FAFSA Submission Summary uploaded with the application. The Horatio Alger National Scholarship requires financial need documentation for families with income at or below $55,000. The Jackie Robinson Foundation has a need-based component. If you wait until January to file FAFSA, you've already missed three of the highest-value scholarships on this list.
The 2026-27 FAFSA portal is open now. File in October at the latest. For Gates specifically, file before you apply, because you will need your Student Aid Report number during the application process itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
When do scholarship applications open for Class of 2027?
Several major programs are already open as of July 2026: the Gates Scholarship (opened July 15), Regeneron STS (opened June 1), BigFuture, Bold.org, and Niche. Coca-Cola Scholars opens August 3, QuestBridge opens late August, and most fall scholarships (Voice of Democracy, Jackie Robinson, Jack Kent Cooke) open in September. Dell Scholars opens December 15 and NAACP won't open until approximately April 2027.
Do I need FAFSA to apply for scholarships?
It depends on the program. Need-based scholarships including Gates, Dell Scholars, NAACP, Horatio Alger, and Jackie Robinson Foundation all require FAFSA documentation. Merit-based programs like Coca-Cola Scholars and Regeneron STS do not. For QuestBridge, FAFSA is not a strict requirement but financial documentation is, and FAFSA data supports your income verification. File FAFSA early regardless, because several September and October scholarship deadlines require it.
Is the Gates Scholarship a full ride?
The Gates Scholarship covers full cost of attendance, but it functions as a "last-dollar" award. It fills the gap between your total cost and all other aid you receive. A student at a lower-cost state university may receive a smaller annual award than one attending a private university with a higher sticker price. About 300 scholars are selected each year from a highly competitive pool.
Can I apply to QuestBridge and Gates in the same year?
Yes. Being a QuestBridge Finalist who does not receive a Match does not disqualify you from Gates or any other scholarship. The two programs are not mutually exclusive. Students who are low-income, high-achieving, and from minority backgrounds often benefit from applying to both simultaneously, since the essay themes around background, resilience, and community frequently overlap.
Is the Dell Scholars Program open right now?
No. The Class of 2026 cycle closed February 15, 2026, and scholars were announced in June 2026. The Class of 2027 portal opens December 15, 2026, with a deadline of February 15, 2027. Any website showing Dell Scholars as a current opportunity for seniors right now is displaying an outdated deadline. Bookmark the Dell Scholars page and return in December.
What to Do This Weekend
Five concrete steps, in priority order:
- Open your Gates Scholarship profile today at thegatesscholarship.org if you meet the eligibility criteria (minority student, Pell-eligible, GPA at or above 3.3, US citizen or permanent resident). The September 15 deadline is nine weeks away and you need FAFSA filed before you can submit.
- Enter Bold.org and Niche no-essay scholarships before July 31. Both close this month. It takes under fifteen minutes combined and requires no essay.
- Complete at least two BigFuture planning tasks at bigfuture.collegeboard.org this weekend. Each task earns you monthly drawing entries. The October 31 deadline for "Strengthen Your College List" aligns perfectly with when you'll be finalizing your college list anyway.
- Set a calendar reminder for August 3 to start Phase 1 of the Coca-Cola Scholars application. It requires no essays, no recommendations, and no transcript at that stage. There is zero reason to wait.
- File your FAFSA in October. If your family has already done taxes for 2025, you can file even earlier. Gates, Dell, Horatio Alger, Jackie Robinson, and NAACP all require it. Getting FAFSA done early protects every need-based scholarship deadline this fall.
The students who win scholarships aren't necessarily the most qualified on paper. They're the ones who started in July.
