Only six of the nine UC campuses participate in the Transfer Admission Guarantee, and Berkeley, UCLA, and UC San Diego are not among them. If you've been planning your entire transfer strategy around TAG at one of those three, you need to read this now. For students at the right campus with the right major and the right GPA, TAG converts one of the most competitive transfer processes in the country into a genuine guarantee. But the window opens September 1, slams shut September 30, and there are 12 universal requirements you have to meet before you even get to the campus-specific ones.

What UC TAG Is (and How It Works)

The UC Transfer Admission Guarantee is a program that offers guaranteed admission to eligible California Community College students who meet specified coursework, unit, and GPA requirements at one of six participating campuses. You apply through a separate tool called UC TAP, you select one campus and one major, and if you meet every requirement, that campus is obligated to admit you.

TAG is not a replacement for the UC application, which you still have to file separately between October 1 and November 30. It's not available at all nine UCs. And it doesn't mean you automatically hear back by November. More on that in the deadline calendar below.

The official TAG matrix shows roughly two-thirds of transfer students admitted to UC do not have a TAG. That doesn't mean you should skip it if you qualify. TAG is a strategic tool: if you're eligible, it's one of the best moves available to a CCC student.

The 6 Participating UC Campuses

The six campuses are UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz. You can submit a TAG to only one. Someone who TAGs to UC Irvine and misses the 3.4 GPA requirement has no fallback TAG; they compete in the regular applicant pool like everyone else. Your campus selection in September carries real consequences.

All 12 Universal Eligibility Requirements for Fall 2027

A critical note before you read these: The UC system published two versions of the TAG matrix this cycle. The August 8 version contained a typo in Requirement 3, stating the 7-course pattern had to be completed by "spring 2026," a date already in the past at the time of TAG submission. The updated August 18 PDF corrects this to "spring 2027." Use only the August 18 version. Every requirement below reflects that corrected language.

Requirement 1. At least 30 semester (or 45 quarter) UC-transferable units completed by end of summer 2026.

Requirement 2. At least one UC English composition course (UC-E) and one UC math course (UC-M) completed by end of fall 2026.

Requirement 3. The full 7-course pattern completed by spring 2027: two UC-E courses, one UC-M course, and four UC-transferable courses from at least two of Arts & Humanities, Social & Behavioral Sciences, and Physical & Biological Sciences. Every course must be a C or better. (The corrected deadline is spring 2027, not spring 2026.)

Requirement 4. 60 semester (or 90 quarter) UC-transferable units completed by end of spring 2027.

Requirement 5. At least 30 semester (or 45 quarter) UC-transferable units earned at one or more California Community Colleges by spring 2027, with a CCC as your last school of attendance in a regular session.

Requirement 6. No more than 19 UC-transferable units still needed in spring 2027 to reach junior standing.

Requirement 7. Total UC-transferable units must not exceed 80 semester (or 120 quarter) after applying lower-division limits. Students with only CCC coursework plus AP, IB, or A-level credits typically won't hit this ceiling.

Requirement 8. No grade lower than a C in fall, winter, and/or spring terms, with good academic standing maintained. The fall 2027 matrix replaced the prior cycle's explicit "2.0 GPA" language with "good academic standing," but the practical threshold is the same. The August 18 update explicitly flags this revision.

Requirement 9. TAG application submitted through UC TAP between September 1 and September 30, 2026. No extensions. No exceptions.

Requirement 10. UC application submitted between October 1 and November 30, 2026, with your major for the TAG campus matching your TAG application exactly. A mismatch voids the guarantee.

Requirement 11. Transfer Academic Update (TAU) submitted by January 31, 2027.

Requirement 12. All campus-specific requirements met for your chosen campus.

Students who have already earned a bachelor's degree, who are returning to a UC campus where they were previously enrolled, who left a UC campus not in good standing, or who are concurrently enrolled in high school at the time of TAG submission are ineligible.

A few campus-specific details worth flagging:

UC Davis requires a 3.2 GPA for most colleges and a 3.5 for Engineering. At least one UC-E and your UC-M must both be done by end of fall 2026. Business, Computer Science, and Data Science are excluded.

UC Irvine measures GPA at the end of fall 2026, giving you one extra term to strengthen your record. All majors in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences are out, as are Business Administration, Nursing Science, Art, Dance, and Music (B.Mus.). UCI has announced that starting with fall 2028 applicants, Psychology, Economics, Biological Sciences, and several engineering majors will also be excluded. That doesn't affect fall 2027, but worth knowing if you're advising a younger student.

UC Merced has the most accessible GPA floors (as low as 2.8 for Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts) and is the only campus with an explicitly published decision date of November 15. It also offers a spring TAG window (May 1–31 application, July 31 UC application deadline).

UC Riverside is the only TAG campus where Computer Science is available, but it requires a 3.60 GPA. Computer Engineering requires a 3.30. If you're a CS student who wants a guaranteed UC pathway, UCR is your only option in the TAG system.

UC Santa Barbara requires a 3.4 overall GPA by end of fall 2026. Within Letters & Science, some high-demand majors carry additional requirements above the 3.4 floor. Per UCSB's admissions office, TAG applicants do not receive an early decision; notifications come in April.

UC Santa Cruz sets a 3.0 GPA floor. TAG decisions are "normally released on November 15" per the UCSC TAG page, making it one of the earlier signals in the system.

The Three-Step TAG Submission Process

Step 1: Submit your TAG through UC TAP (September 1–30, 2026)

Create or log in to your UC TAP account, select your one participating campus, confirm your major, and work through the four-part submission flow: add clarifying comments, check each requirement box, submit the TAG, and complete the UC Application Survey. Review your application with your community college transfer advisor before hitting submit. September 30 is a hard cutoff.

Step 2: Submit the UC Application (October 1–November 30, 2026)

File at apply.universityofcalifornia.edu. The major you select for your TAG campus must exactly match what's on your TAG. You can simultaneously apply to other UCs, including Berkeley, UCLA, and San Diego; the one-campus restriction is TAG-specific. Per the UC Transfer Dates & Deadlines page, the deadline is November 30, not December 1 as in the prior cycle.

Step 3: Submit the Transfer Academic Update by January 31, 2027

The TAU opens in mid-December 2026 and is where you report final fall 2026 grades and verify spring 2027 coursework. January 31 is the operative deadline for TAG holders. Submit even if you're not taking spring courses.

The November 15 early signal applies only to Merced, Santa Cruz, and Davis. Irvine, Santa Barbara, and Riverside TAG holders wait until April, on the same timeline as non-TAG applicants at those campuses.

Verify your unit count. Pull your unofficial transcript and count your UC-transferable units. You need at least 30 semester or 45 quarter units completed by end of summer 2026. If you're not there, TAG may not be available to you this cycle.

Confirm your 7-course pattern progress. Your first English composition and Math courses must be done by end of fall 2026 at minimum. The remaining courses need to be completed by spring 2027.
